Skin glue closes a wound. The skin underneath still has work to do. The glue holds the edges, blocks bacteria, and peels away once healing is done five to ten days for most wounds. What patients do in that window changes the outcome. Soak it too early and the bond fails. Pick at it and healing tissue comes with it. Skip sun protection afterwards and the scar pigments darker than it needs to. Simple rules. Regularly ignored.
According to Dr. Rajeev Premnath, a trusted General and Laparoscopic Surgeon in Banglore, “Patients trip over the same things every time soaking too early, picking when it lifts, skipping SPF once it’s off. Leave it alone and let it fall off when it’s ready. Once it’s gone, sunscreen on that scar every day for six months. That’s the part most people skip and then wonder why the scar looks the way it does.”
What Should You Do and Avoid in the First 48 Hours?
The first 48 hours determine how cleanly the wound heals. For a full overview of wound closure options, visit our skin glue services page.
What About Bathing, Swimming and Sun Exposure Over the First Ten Days?
After 48 hours, most activity resumes. Not everything. A few things wait.
- Showering: Fine from 48 hours. Brief contact with water won’t break things down. Scrubbing the area will. Holding it under the shower head directly will. Pat dry afterwards; don’t rub. Baths, hot tubs, and prolonged soaking will remove the glue from the table.
- Swimming: Ten days minimum. Pool chlorine degrades the adhesive and disrupts what’s still healing underneath. Open water is a different risk: bacteria entering a wound that hasn’t fully closed under the glue layer.
- Sun: Once the glue comes off, keep UV off that scar for six months. Sun drives pigmentation in fresh skin. The colour change it causes doesn’t reverse. SPF 30 daily on the healed site makes a measurable difference to what the scar looks like long term.
- When it starts lifting: The glue loosens at the edges as skin below finishes healing. Leave it. Pulling it off early takes surface skin cells with it. Corner catching on clothing: use small scissors to trim it, not pulling.
Most wounds heal fully within ten days. Our blog on skin glue vs stitches covers how both closure methods compare on healing and scarring outcomes.

FAQs
Can I shower with skin glue on my wound?
Yes from 48 hours. Brief showers are fine. No scrubbing, soaking, or directing water directly at the wound until the glue has come off.
When can I swim after skin glue wound closure?
Ten days minimum, once the glue has fully detached. Pool chemicals and open water both carry infection risk to a wound still healing beneath the glue.
Should I peel off skin glue when it starts lifting?
No. Leave it. Pulling it off takes healing skin with it. If a loose corner is catching, trim it with scissors.
How long does skin glue take to fall off?
Five to ten days for most wounds as the skin underneath completes healing.
