Day Care Surgery

I’m a passionate advocate of Day Care Surgery. It’s a form of surgery in which a patient is hospitalized only for the duration of the surgery and is discharged on the same day (after a few hours of recuperation time).

We use special┬ásurgical and anaesthesia techniques to minimize pain during and after the procedure, enabling the patient to recover rapidly. It’s also cost-effective, and saves the patient time.

I’ve seen that when patients recover at home sleeping in their own bed, attended to by a dear one, it works wonders.

Surgeries where Day Care techniques are employed commonly are

  • Hernia with the 3D mesh devices such as PHS and UHS with Fibrin glue.
  • Laparoscopic appendicectomy
  • Mini Laparoscopic appendicectomy
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Mini Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Video Assisted Anal Fistula Treatment (VAAFT)
  • Minimally Invasive Procedure for Haemorrhoids/Piles (MIPH)
  • Lateral Sphincterotomy surgery for Anal fissures
  • Fistulectomy for anal fistula
  • Incision and drainage for perianal abscesses
  • Circumcision
  • Removal of benign breast lumps

Most patients with these surgeries are usually able to go home within a 24 hour period. The main advantages of day care surgery have been early mobilization(walking around) because anaesthesia wears out faster than conventional drugs, less pain because of safer and longer acting drugs and minimally invasive surgical techniques, early return of patient to their home envirnoment – means easier domestic arrangements. Reduced risk of cross infection in hospitals. Earlier return to work means less loss of pay ! The surgeon treating you will be the one to decide if your a candidate for day care surgery.
